Hoots & Hellmouth
Hoots & Hellmouth on the Salt Stage Thursday June 28, 2012 at 8:00PM.

A savory stew of roots, rock and soul, served with love. And hot sauce. Lots of hot sauce.

"Blending soul, folk, country, gospel, and rock with the sounds of classic Americana…(Hoots & Hellmouth) lived up to the promise of its revival-like live shows.”
— NPR Radio Broadcast

"The Hoots’ blend of alt-country, rock, and gospel was amplified only by their own considerable joy...the disparate trio proved that showmanship is more about attitude and energy.”
— The Boston Globe

Hoots & Hellmouth are a busy bunch. Road warriors to the bitter end, they’ve somehow found time to enter the studio twice in the last year to produce two records showcasing their forward-thinking roots/soul music. Their latest offering, the full-length Salt (street date 10/4/11), was recorded in their hometown of Philadelphia at Miner Street Studios with friend/engineer Jon Low (Dr. Dog, Sharon Van Etten, Twin Sister). The result speaks volumes to the evolution of a band committed to pushing their boundaries and exploring new sonic horizons.

Salt builds on the fresh ground broken on their previously released EP, Face First In The Dirt, continuing down a path of explosive creativity. "Why Would You Not Want To Go There?" kicks things off with a building intensity reflective of their passionate live performances, but tempered with well-placed flourishes of piano and electric guitar. H&H’s trademark soul vibe is thick on "Lay Low," incorporating the stomp groove and call-and-response vocals familiar to established fans of the band. By the time the listener reaches the middle of the record, the dynamic and deep "Apple Like A Wrecking Ball" and "The Ache" drive home the point that these guys are not content to rest on their laurels. To round it all out, album closer "Being Borned Again" continues their tradition of massive group sing-alongs so vibrant the listener already feels the chills of the anticipated live rendition.

Lyrically, Sean Hoots has always endeavored to keep a keen eye on the craft of songwriting, and Salt showcases the artist on top of his game. These new songs reveal a greater depth of vulnerability and personalization unheard on previous H&H offerings. This is the sound of a writer digging deep, planting seeds and harvesting a bumper crop of thought-provoking, soul-scraping tunes.

With all the envelope-pushing found on Salt, one thing that won’t change any time soon is the band’s love of the road. Touring the old-fashioned way (relentlessly!), the band performs in all manner of venues on their own and with friends like Dr. Dog, O’Death, Heartless Bastards, Langhorne Slim, Grace Potter, etc. From rock clubs to folk festivals, they tour consistently and persistently, including triumphant stops at Wakarusa, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, SXSW, thousands of dive bars and more than a few farms in between.

David Jacobs-Strain
David Jacobs-Strain on the Salt Stage Thursday April 12, 2012 at 8:00PM.

David Jacobs-Strain is a virtuosic slide guitar player and a storyteller with a passionate one man show that is both humorous and deeply lyrical. A bridge between today’s indie folk troubadours and the delta guitar slingers of the 1930's, David plays with precision and sings with emotional abandon. He’s a six-foot-two Jewish blues singer from Oregon, a Stanford drop-out in a trucker hat, and a Left Coast poet; one part Leo Kotke, one part Ken Kesey, and one part Robert Johnson. Is it Delta Blues? Gangsta Grass? Geekabilly? Secular Humanist Gospel? It’s a sound big enough to land David at the Newport Folk Festival —as a teenager— and later at MerleFest, the Strawberry Music Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Fest, and on tour with artists as diverse as Lucinda Williams, Etta James, Bob Weir, and Boz Scaggs (for three summer tours).

David’s new record " Live From The Left Coast" features harmonica legend Bob Beach. "Rainbow Junkies" could be a lost Jimmie Page tune, "Hurricane Railroad" grooves like a young David Lindley, while “Dirt And Wildflowers” is a quirky but sexy revelation (like the Moldy Peaches meet Towns Van Zandt). The cascading harmonics and retro tinted lyrics of "Halfway To The Coast" and "Pescadero Beach" evoke the damaged but wild Northwest: heartbroken but beautiful, melodic and spare.

Patty Larkin
Patty Larkin on the Salt Stage Thursday March 22, 2012 at 8:00PM.

Patty Larkin is part of the urban-folk/pop music phenomenon that spun off of the singer/songwriter explosion of the seventies, reinterpreting traditional folk melodies, rock, pop, bossa nova, drawing on anything from Dylan (Bob) to Dylan (Thomas). A self described "guitar driven songwriter," Larkin has wound her way through soundscapes of evocative vocals, inventive guitar wizardry and imaginative lyrics. Her songs run from impressionistic poetry to witty wordplay.

Rory Block
Rory Block on the Salt Stage Thursday March 8, 2012 at 8:00PM.

Heralded as "a living landmark" (Berkeley Express), "a national treasure" (Guitar Extra), and "one of the greatest living acoustic blues artists" (Blues Revue), Rory Block has committed her life and her career to preserving the Delta blues tradition and bringing it to life for 21st century audiences around the world. A traditionalist and an innovator at the same time, she wields a fiery and haunting guitar and vocal style that redefines the boundaries of acoustic blues and folk. The New York Times declared: "Her playing is perfect, her singing otherworldly as she wrestles with ghosts, shadows and legends."

Born in Princeton, NJ, Aurora "Rory" Block grew up in Manhattan a family with Bohemian leanings. Her father owned a Greenwich Village sandal shop, where musicians like Bob Dylan, Maria Muldaur and John Sebastian all made occasional appearances. The rich and diverse Village scene was a constant influence on her cultural sensibilities. She was playing guitar by age ten, and by her early teens she was sitting in on the Sunday jam sessions in Washington Square Park.

Jonathan Edwards on the Salt Stage Thursday February 9, 2012 at 8:00PM.

Warm as summer sunshine, real as the truth, intimate as a long overdue visit between old friends … such is a Jonathan Edwards concert. Four decades into a stellar career of uncompromising musical integrity, the man simply delivers, night after night – songs of passion, songs of insight, songs of humor, all rendered in that pure and powerful tenor which, like fine wine, has only grown sweeter with age.

George Kilby Jr. w/ Special Guest Phil Wiggins
George Kilby Jr. with special guest Phil Wiggins
on the Salt Stage Thursday January 12, 2012 at 8:00PM.

George Kilby Jr. spent many years playing and producing for the Late and Legendary Pinetop Perkins. Pinetop's recent passing has urged him to get back to his roots. One of the tunes on his upcoming CD features Kilby in a traditional format, which is a departure from his usual hybrid/alternative style of blues. Joining Kilby on the recording and on tour is harmonica ace Phil Wiggins, who was half of the internationally famous acoustic blues duo "Cephas and Wiggins" . As ambassadors of the Piedmont blues, Cephas and Wiggins took their music to venues including Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and the White House. Kilby and Wiggins met at a blues festival in July and have been collaborating since then.

Peter Tork
An Intimate Evening With Peter Tork on the Salt Stage Thursday December 15, 2011 at 8:30PM.

Long before he became a legendary part of the prefab phenomenon known as the "The Monkees," Peter Tork was already a well-respected musician/artist in the burgeoning New York folk and blues scene. Tork’s gift for playing a plethora of instruments (bass, guitar, keyboard, banjo and french horn) generated high demand for his services as a sideman/back-up artist. Peter knocked around for several hungry years in the mid-60's, hanging and performing with the likes of John Phillips, Steven Stills, Dave Van Ronk, Van Dyke Parks and Arthur Lee, among others. In June of 1965 Tork auditioned for what was to become a TV show called The Monkees – a band that was styled after the Beatles. Tork was selected and thus joined up what was to become a ground breaking multimedia TV project never before seen on TV centering around a zany, young, rock/pop band, four members in all.Throughout the years since The Monkees, Tork has performed with various bands and now he will be appearing solo for "An Intimate Evening With Peter Tork" only at Salt Gastropub. This show will sell out quickly!

Patrick Fitzsimmons
On the Salt Stage Tuesday November 22, 2011 at 8:30PM will be Patrick Fitzsimmons.

Patrick writes songs that have that rare combination of strong lyrics and strong melody. Relix Magazine called him “one of the most captivating songwriters around today.” He is a three-time Ploughshares songwriting contest finalist and has had his songs placed in several independent films. His latest CD, So Beautiful So Blue,Best of 2008 lists and is being played on radio stations all over the country. He continues to tour throughout the northeast building a large and loyal following with his soulful, captivating performances.

As a young boy, Patrick loved the singer/songwriters of the ’70’s, drawn to the works of such artists as Cat Stevens, Paul Simon & James Taylor. In high school in Sparta New Jersey, he and two classmates formed a band that would ultimately become From Good Homes, a New Jersey based folk/rock band signed to RCA Records in the mid ‘90’s. FGH recorded three CDs with RCA & toured the country sharing the stage with Bob Dylan, Dave Mathews Band, Joan Osborne and many others. We are excited to have Patrick make his first time appearence on the Salt Stage!

The Kennedys
The Kennedys,(Maura & Pete) will be bringing their amazing vocal and instrumental talents to the Salt Stage Thursday November 10, 2011 at 8:30PM.

Pete and Maura Kennedy met at the Continental Club in Austin Texas. Within a few weeks, they went on their first date at Buddy Holly's grave in Lubbock, TX, and within a year, they were touring together, as part of Nanci Griffith's band, and as the opening act on Nanci's two month tour of the British Isles. In a dusty little dressing room on the top floor of Dublin's Olympia theatre, they penned the songs that would become their first CD, "River of Fallen Stars". The CD was awarded the "Indie" award in 1995 for "Best Adult Contemporary CD" by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. Eight CDs and half a million miles of touring later, they enjoy loyal followings in both the guitar camp and the singer-songwriter set. Ultimately it's their tight harmonies, their chemistry, and their unashamedly idealistic outlook that has carved them their own niche in the studio and onstage. Salt is excited to bring the Kennedys to our stage.

Briz CD Release Party
On the Salt Stage Wednesday May 4th, 2011 at 8:30PM is Briz joined by The Willow Hill Band.

Join us for an evening of original music with NJ singer/songwriter and Salt House Musician Briz as he performs songs from his latest CD "Hard Times". Recorded on a Tascam “portastudio”, like Springsteens "Nebraska", Briz keeps it simple this time around playing all of the instruments: guitar, harmonica, organ, and an assortment of percussive instruments including washboard and guiro for his stark portrait of the American landscape. Songs like “Broke Down Truck”, “Life of Crime” and the title track “Hard Times” tell the stories of ordinary people and their daily struggles. Many of the songs were recorded using only two tracks, washed with delay and mixed down in mono to achieve a more somber tone. Briz will be joined onstage with his band “Willow Hill”. Compromised of New Jersey musicians Jim Popik (guitar), John Killgallin (bass), David Gerzberg (violin), Jim Lowinger (guitar), and Jim Argus (banjo), all are accomplished musicians well known for their solo and group projects. "Willow Hill" will take the stage for the second portion of the show to bring some extended old timey instrumentals to many of the songs.

Steve Chapin & Big John Wallace
"Remembering Harry Chapin.....It was 30 Years Ago"
On the Salt Stage Monday April 18, 2011 at 8:30PM is Steve Chapin & Big John Wallace.

Since 1991, the performances of The Steve Chapin Band have proven to be a total delight to both the legions of Chapin fans who attended Harry Chapin's concerts in the seventies, and the flourishing next-generation of Chapin enthusiasts. The enduring legacy of Harry's music is alive and well each time Steve, along with Chapin band alumnus Big John Wallace (bass guitar/pyrotechnic vocals), take the stage to perform their stunning recreations of Harry's most well-loved songs as well as Steve's own beautiful tunes. His popular "Let Time Go Lightly", from the platinum LP "Greatest Stories Live", is just one of the songs written by the band’s leader that round out the evening of Chapin music. Furthermore, their casual, on-stage conversations reflect absorbingly nostalgic, ‘behind-the-music’-like anecdotes and memories of their personal experiences on the road and in the studio with Harry. And now, with the delightful addition of the guitars of Big John's son Clark Wallace and Steve's son Jonathan Chapin, songs such as "Cat's In The Cradle", "Taxi", "Mr. Tanner", "Better Place To Be", and "W.O.L.D." attain even deeper musical dimension while maintaining that special affinity they have always had with Harry's fans.

Big Boss Sausage - On the Salt Stage Thusrday April 14, 2011 at 8:30pm is Big Boss Sausage.

The barnyard dogs of rock and roll are here and apparently they aren’t going away. For 15+ years, Big Boss Sausage and the Pacifist of Fury (formerly Acoustic Sausage) have been writing, recording, and performing throughout these United States building a loyal following along the way. The boys just released their 2nd full length, self-titled CD on Hear the Light Records. The CD was recorded at Shack Studio in Sussex, N.J. by the legend, Dwayne (D2) Sumal. Sumal has worked with the likes of Kid Rock, Ron Wood, Naughty by Nature, and Busta Rhymes to name a few. This album is like nothing ever created; it is a blend of folk, country, disco, rock, and punk, otherwise known as FO-CO-CO-RO-PU. Think Gandhi meets Blondie, and then they invite Bob Dylan and the Violent Femmes over for a jam session. I know what you’re thinking. Did Gandhi rock? Well, probably not, but he was a very nice guy and I think he played the flute. Wait! It gets better. Before long, The Bee Gees show up with Johnny Cash and the party goes all night long until Barry Gibb picks a fight with Bob Dylan for repeated Bogarting -- but who didn’t see that coming? Are you following any of this? If you are, then I’ll have 2 of what you’re having. Their live shows are hilarious, high energy, soul-bearing experiences that often make the audience laugh, cry, think, and wonder why. Have you seen the Sausage and the Pacifist? You won’t know what didn’t hit you!

MacGyver's Girls - On the Salt Stage
St. Patricks Day Celebration March 17
Briz (5-9pm) MacGyver's Girls (9:45-12midnite)
9.00 cover at the door starting at 5pm

Mission Statement
MacGyver's Girls was formed (a.) to put Desiree Gordon on the pedestal she deserves and (b.) to glorify the ukulele as the weapon of the future. The Band
Desiree Gordon, sultry and distracted, composes whimsical musings on the everyday and the taboo, and then goes and sings them with her uke. She is supported by the machine-gun lead guitar talents of Liam Frier, who sings (and ukes) as well. The rhythm section is son and father team Jonathan and Steve Chapin; Jonathan (already a legend with the twelve year olds for his heavy-metal-uke-moves) plays guitar and bass also; and Steve (survivor of the folk era) supplies keyboards and other necessities too numerous to mention (he's also the keeper of the debit card pin numbers).

The History
They met at a campground in Nova Scotia. The complications of Canadian language/American language mis-communication led them quickly to the one certainty in both lexicons... MacGyver.
Angus MacGyver; wherein lies the fruits of all civilization.

The Music
She brings in a song...we learn it...we play it.
If she comes in empty handed, we pick something else and learn it also. We are so hip, we even amaze ourselves... and yes, you could even say we suffer from self-hipnosis.

MacGyver's Girls

Graham Parker - On the Salt Stage Wednesday March 2nd, 2011 at 8:30pm is Graham Parker.

For over 30 years, Graham Parker has been slinging a signature sound across continents and airwaves that has rightly earned him a spot in the pantheon of truly original and influential figures in rock and roll. Since his early days with his band the Rumour (with whom he has two albums in Rolling Stone's "Top 100 Albums of All Time"), Graham has coupled punk's energy with his deeply rooted love of American R&B, country and soul music. He's got a snotty barroom brawler's rasp and sneer, a soulman's swagger and an ear for indelible hooks and pop songcraft.

David Johansen - On the Salt Stage Thurs July 1, 2010 at 8:30pm is David Johansen (New York Dolls, Buster Poindexter, Harry Smiths)

The special show, which has been titled "An Evening With David Johansen," will present the singer-songwriter side of this multi-faceted entertainer, featuring songs from the NEW YORK DOLLS both old and new, his solo records with THE DAVID JOHANSEN BAND, BUSTER POINDEXTER, THE HARRY SMITHS, and even a few choice covers.

"I've been wanting to play a bunch of songs that I don't normally get the opportunity to sing in a loud and fast DOLLS show. As much as I love that, I also like to explore the more soulful side of singing," Johansen said. "I'll be singing songs from throughout my career and maybe some songs that have inspired me in a mellow and intimate setting."

Opening music  starting at 7pm.  There will be dinner being served from 4pm - 7:30pm and it will be a first come first sat thing.  Help spread the word. Come hear world class music in an incredible setting!!

Chris Smither - On the Salt Stage Thurs October 21, 2010 at 8:30pm is Chris Smither .

“Back in the old days,” muses resilient troubadour Chris Smither, “writing new songs and making new albums were just chores. My priority was, and still is, performing live. I guess I still write the songs and make the records so that I can go out and play – except that now I actually look forward to it. I’ve learned how to do it, and I’m very eager to get stuff recorded once I’ve written it.”

ROLLING STONE: Bathed in the flickering glow of passing headlights and neon bar signs, Smither’s roots are as blue as they come. There is plenty of misty Louisiana and Lightnin’ Hopkins in Smither’s weathered singing and unhurried picking. So fine.

WIRED: The masterful combination of pure folk songwriting and intricate guitar blues are tangible signs of the singer-songwriter’s vigorous genius. A megawatt solo performer.

NO DEPRESSION: If you’ve ever caught one of Chris Smither’s live performances, you know it’s hard not to come away knocked out by the amount of music that comes out of one man. His guitar playing is remarkably fluid.  His songs are gleaming bits of gold performed in a variety of styles.

MAVERICK/UK: Cast your mind back to the first time you heard Hank Williams, Big Bill Broonzy or JJ Cale and remember how good it felt. Think of the opening encounter with Leon Redbone or Leo Kottke. They say newcomers to Chris Smither’s brand of country blues-tinged southern folk experience those some emotions. It’s true.

IRISH NEWS: Chris Smither really does have it all. He’s an ingenious guitarist. He’s a songwriter of startling originality. He’s an expressive, grainy-voiced singer and he’s also an engaging, witty performer.

Opening will be Salt's own Briz!  starting at 7pm.  There will be dinner being served from 4pm - 7:30pm and it will be a first come first sat thing.  Tickets will be 20.00 plus tax and will ONLY be available throught the Salt website.  So help spread the word. Dan Bern- Salt brings Dan Bern back to Byram for another intimate evening of song . His show last June sold out and a good time was had by all.

Dan Bern is best known for his prolific songwriting and electric live persona. He has released a dozen albums while spending well over a decade performing everywhere from coffee shops to Carnegie Hall. Since releasing his first album in 1997, Bern has amassed a strong underground following built on endless touring and his prodigious output of songs in all forms.  Beginning in 2007, Bern focused much of his talent and sharp wit on motion pictures—he composed over a dozen songs for the Jake Kasdan/Judd Apatow music biopic-spoof "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" and wrote the title song for Jonathan Demme’s documentary, "Jimmy Carter: Man From Plains." Bern also composed songs that will be included in the Nick Stoller/Judd Apatow film "Get Him to the Greek," starring Russell Brand and Jonah Hill, due out June 4, 2010.

pie boys flatPie Boys Flat hit the NYC music scene in 2003 with their unique blend of Reggae, Blues, and Funk. Their writing shows influences ranging from Bob Marley to Jack Johnson to Sublime to Paul Simon and has melded into a form of ethnic Rhythm and Blues that sits firmly in the pocket of a style all its own. Laced with soaring three-part harmonies, their music is the manifestation of a many year friendship and collective musical intuition. Patrick Hambrick (Guitar/Vocals), Fitz Harris (Percussion/Vocals), and Jason Liles (Bass/Vocals) met in the late 1990’s at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia, where the trio formed a bond that is now apparent in both their writing and performing.

As always, Pie Boys Flat remains steeped in rootsy, southern grooves and rich, soaring vocals so, whether a seasoned veteran or a new-found fan, make sure to catch PBF in 2008 because this explosively high-energy trio has only begun to flourish.

Jon WozniakJon Wozniak was born and raised 3.4miles from SALT in Byram, NJ. He burst onto the burgeoning Byram music scene while, still in high school at Lenape Valley, playing every open mic in a forty mile radius. Quickly realizing how fun it was to have the whole room singing along, Jon began amassing a huge repertoire of cover songs. Ten years later Jon can take your requests and have you singing along to an ever expanding catalog ranging range from classic rock (Beatles, Tom Petty, Allman's, Bob Marley), to 90's hits (Oasis, Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Blues Traveler), to contemporary hits (Coldplay, Maroon 5, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers).

As a longtime disciple of pop music, Jon knows the songs to relax and eat by, the songs to dance and sing to, and the songs to pump fists and chug pints of McSorely's to. So stop by on a Friday night, bring a friend, request your favorite song, and sing along! .
